How often do you find yourself on a voice call desperately looking around for the person you’re trying to meet? Or perhaps they’re looking for you in a large public space or unfamiliar city. Maybe simply sharing a quick photo while chatting is the objective. Thrutu, a new app from Metaswitch networks, aims to satisfy this need.
Thrutu isn’t too ambitious but its simplicity is refreshing. It’s a free app that’s currently available in the Apple App store and Android Marketplace. When on a voice call, users can open a virtual drawer which slides out from the right of the screen. The drawer is populated with a few button to allow various actions. These include sending various information to the caller on the other end, including your location, photos, and contact data. You can even “Prod” callers by causing their phone to buzz in their hands.
We liked what we saw in the UI, with actions just a swipe and one-click away from happening. One caveat though. Since the Thrutu uses both the data and voice connections, your wireless carrier must support this. Right now that’s just AT&T, T-Mobile and specifically Verizon’s LTE 4G networks. Also, most of the functions works only among fellow Thrutu users, save the location button.
